The weather is FINALLY warmer and that means my favourite season, summer, is basically here. Which also means that grilling season is officially upon us! All sorts of delicious things get made on our BBQ… steaks, chicken, veggies, kabobs, burgers…there are just so many options.

Who doesn’t enjoy standing outside, enjoying the fresh air and warm weather grilling up some food? One of the easiest things to make on the grill is burgers. Plus who doesn’t love burgers? It’s one food that will please almost anyone. Whether it be beef, chicken, turkey, pork or even veggie, I’m sure everybody has some kind of burger they love!

If you know me, you know I love my food to be “extra”. It doesn’t have to be extravagant, but I like what I make to have a little something special or different about it. Not just your plain old, find anywhere food. That’s why I was so excited to get the opportunity to participate in Burger Month!

Blueberry Brie Bacon Burger

So let’s talk about the burger that I made for this epic celebration! You may have read this and thought “blueberries?! On a BURGER?!”. You have not misread, my friends. I made a sweet tangy blueberry barbecue sauce that tops this burger and it is heaven. Quite possibly my most favourite BBQ sauce ever. And I am absolutely picky when it comes to barbecue sauces… in fact I dislike them more often than not! But this one… this one I love. The blueberries give a lovely sweet flavour to the sauce, without being overwhelmingly sweet. The balsamic vinegar added to it, with its sweet-tart taste gives a nice balanced to the flavours.

Blueberry Barbecue Sauce

The barbecue sauce is really simple to make, essentially just simmering the ingredients together on the stove top for a little bit and then allowing it to cool. Who knew it could be this easy to make barbecue sauce?!

One of my favourite things to enjoy brie with is blueberry jam, so I figured brie would be the perfect cheese to go along with this burger. We’ve got some cheesy goodness going on here! Not only is the burger patty topped with brie cheese, but it is stuffed with brie too! Double the cheese, double the yum factor!

Next up, we’ve got crispy bacon slices added to the mix. It adds a nice salty, savoriness to the creaminess of the brie and sweet tanginess of the blueberry bbq sauce.

Finally I added some sauteed red onion to the burger. I just love onions on a burger, but they always have to be cooked a little for me to enjoy it. I find raw onions can be just too strong and overpowering. By sauteing the onion slices for a few minutes as the burgers are cooked, it mellows them out a bit so they don’t overwhelm the other flavours of the burger.

Lastly, one important thing to me when it comes to burgers are the buns. I’m sorry, but those super cheap burger buns that just fall apart when you hold them just wont cut it. Invest the couple extra bucks in some good quality buns – your taste buds will thank you! I used brioche buns here, and found they were absolutely perfect.

Get ready for some major flavour with this blueberry brie bacon burger! With these ingredients combined, this star of a burger will have you breaking out your barbecue in no time. With it being the May Long Weekend, it is the perfect time to make these!!!

Blueberry Brie Bacon Burger

A delicious gourmet burger you will fall in love with! A homemade burger patty is stuffed and topped with creamy brie cheese, which nicely compliments the sweet and tangy blueberry barbecue sauce. The burger is finished off with crispy bacon for a nice crunch plus sauteed onions and arugula. It doesn't get tastier than this!
Prep Time25 minutes
Cook Time15 minutes
Total Time40 minutes
Course: Main Course
Cuisine: American
Keyword: barbecue, burger, grilling
Servings: 4 burgers

Ingredients

For the Blueberry Barbecue Sauce:

  • 1 1/2 cups blueberries (fresh or frozen)
  • 1/2 small onion , finely chopped
  • 1/2 jalapeno , seeded and minced
  • 1 clove garlic , minced
  • 4 tbsp packed brown sugar
  • 3 tbsp ketchup
  • 3 tbsp balsamic vinegar

For the Burgers:

  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • 3 tbsp breadcrumbs
  • 2 cloves garlic , minced
  • 1 tbsp worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 8 oz brie cheese , rind removed and cut into chunks
  • 4 slices bacon , cut in half and cooked until crispy
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/4 red onion , cut into slices or rounds
  • 3/4 cup arugula
  • 4 tbsp mayonaisse
  • 4 good quality burger buns (I used brioche)

Instructions

For the Blueberry Barbecue Sauce:

  • Add all ingredients for the barbecue sauce into a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low. Allow to simmer, stirring occasionally, until thickened, approximately 15 minutes. Remove from heat and allow to cool. Extra barbecue sauce can be stored in an airtight jar in the fridge for 5 days.

For the Burgers:

  • In a large bowl, add the ground beef, breadcrumbs, garlic, worcestershire sauce, salt and black pepper. Using your hands combine the ingredients together, careful not to over mix.
  • Divide beef mixture into 4 and form into 4 rough patties. (No worry about making them perfect just yet as we will be reshaping them!)
  • Divide half of the brie among the patties and fold beef around the cheese. I like to roll it into a sort of ball shape and then flatten back into a patty shape, with the cheese in the center.
  • On a grill or in a large pan on your stove top cook patties over medium high heat for 3-4 minutes. Flip, and cook for another 3 minutes. Add the remaining brie on top of the burgers, cover and cook for another 1-2 minutes until burgers are cooked through and cheese is melted. Remove from heat and set aside.
  • Heat oil in a small skillet. Saute the red onion for 5 or so minutes, until softened and remove from heat.
  • Time to assemble the burgers! Spread the mayonnaise evenly among the buns. Add the burger patties, then top with the blueberry barbecue sauce, bacon slices, onion and arugula. Top with the other half of the bun. Enjoy while still hot!

I made this burger for father’s day. My dad loved it, he said it was the best burger he has ever had. That’s big coming from my dad. I will be making it again for family that is coming in soon. The only thing that I did different was add pork to my beef mix.
